Asian scholar and black belt artist Connor Burke labors as a deshi—a student under the tutelage of a master warrior— a practice that draws him into the execution-style murder of a Japanese businessman in Brooklyn.
Connor’s brother, an officer in the NYPD, enlists him to decipher the strange calligraphic writing left by the victim at the crime scene. The enigmatic message leads Connor to the lethal samurai heritage of a mysterious martial arts sensei, the foreboding world of a Tibetan clairvoyant, and finally the unknown wilderness of an elite mountain temple—where Connor’s deadliest challenge awaits.
Deshi Connor Burke Martial Arts Book 2 eBook John Donohue
Another excellent installment in the Connor Burke series, it was worth every minute I spent reading it. As always, the author's understanding of Japanese martial arts and that traditional Sensei/Student relationship comes through loud and clear. I constantly find myself smiling (perhaps a bit grimly at times) and nodding along in agreement with his description of the intricacies of the relationships between students and instructors as well as the hard-headed "my style is best!" attitude so often demonstrated when students from mixed styles are forced together and the egos we are supposed to spend so much energy negating spring up with a life all their own. As an avid martial artist and retired law enforcement officer I enjoy the crime solving, the way Connor's brother Micky and his partner, Al are portrayed, the way the get lambasted by the brass who are concerned more with politics than casework, and of course the martial arts action. Usually when I read (and re-read) Connor's explanations of basic principles of martial arts I can hear my sensei's voice (and sometimes my own telling my students the same thing).Product details

Deshi Connor Burke Martial Arts Book 2 eBook John Donohue Reviews
Steeped in Eastern philosophy, rich with language that evokes the sweat and intensity of a Japanese dojo, and peppered with gritty cop talk and wry humor, John Donohue's "Deshi" smoothly folds mysticism into this top-notch action thriller.
Spiritual/metaphysical content High. The villain is a martial arts sensei who teaches a potent New Age blend of Tibetan mysticism and the lethal heritage of the samurai. Connor Burke, master of the Japanese sword, is a thinking man's hero who embodies both the physical and spiritual aspects of the Asian disciplines. He is guided by a Tibetan rimpoche (lama), a clairvoyant mystic who grounds the story in spirituality.
My take I loved the spare, elegant prose that reflects the spiritual simplicity of the story. Donohue underpins the intense action with depictions of a mystical martial arts culture that evoke the beauty of haiku. The characters--sensei Yamashita, deshi (student) Connor Burke, and the Tibetan rimpoche--are as finely drawn as the missing calligraphy scroll that holds the clues to solving the mystery. At once a gripping exploration of Eastern wisdom and a gritty cop thriller, "Deshi" fed both my desire to seek truth and my need for bloodthirsty catharsis in a satisfying balance of oriental philosophy and Western sensibility.
I have always been a voracious reader. Some of my favorite kinds of novels are mysteries, military adventures, westerns and martial art thrillers. More than fifty years ago (1958) I was hooked on the “Kill me series” by Earl Norman, which unfortunately are no longer in print.
I recently discovered a novelist who is also an expert in many Japanese martial arts. The first two martial arts novels (Sensei and Tengu The mountain goblin) were fantastic reads.
This is the third (Deshi by John Donohue) martial art novel I have read in the series.
Like the previous novels this one is filled with numerous martial art terms, training exercises and philosophical dialogue to make us martial artists love the characters. This includes Connor Burke, a professor at a university and long-time student of the martial arts, his brother Micky, who is a New York Detective, and Burke’s long time Sensei, Yamashita. Deshi means the disciple and usually refers to the relationship between a martial arts master and his or her top student. This is a Japanese term and those who are seriously into one of the arts are familiar with this honored position.
In this story a master of “Shodo” which is the “Way of the Brush” who is murdered just as he began finishing one stroke with his brush. There are numerous twists and turns as this murder mystery unfolds. The story moves along at a steady pace with many unusual characters who all may be suspect. The ending is exciting and suspenseful.
I never like to give away too much information when reviewing novels because it spoils it for the reader. If you are a Connor Burke fan you will enjoy this book. If you like martial art thrillers with interesting characters you should check or this novel.
Rating 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author Wakizashi-Jutsu A Bushi Satori Ryu basic manual).
